Because it's the best transition for potty training, environmentally sound, a good company and easier to deal with than pee pads. Let me explain:
I am a dog trainer. I day train and go to visit my dogs daily. I give them a daily walk with a potty break in a high-rises in a large downtown area and work on training issues that keep them from being able to walk with a regular dog walker. Many times there is confusion and someone will call me expecting me to be a dog walker. I will meet them. I will show them my prices and they will jump out of their skin. They are clearly not dog walking prices. When they explain that their dog just needs to relieve themselves in the middle of the day, we start discussing options. This is when I bring up the fresh patch. A lot of people have a good relationship with their pups. Many people downtown live and active lifestyle and enjoy a good walk, twice daily with their pup. Many even run home on their lunch break. For these folks, I recommend a fresh patch. If the pups are getting enough exercise with rigorous daily walks in the morning and evening, then paying someone to come at the hottest part of the day for additional walks may not be necessary. The solution is fresh grass in their own home, delivered and refreshed on a regular cycle. If you have a balcony, it's great. Let the pup out and they do their business and come back in. If not, the grass might need to be refreshed more often. The cost to do this is still much less than bringing in stranger to take your dog out in the heat.
The back story of the Fresh Patch, as told to me by the very nice customer service agent is an American Dream. The innovator moved from a house to a townhouse and had no grass for his pup. He ended up trying to create a hydroponics grass for his pup in his small space and that idea took off. He created his company and took it all the way to Shark Tank. It was a successful campaign and company is still going strong. They are based in California and branching out to a facility to Kentucky to handle East Coast operations. While the company is doing very well. They are still a small group of employees with low attrition. The gal I spoke to at customer service spoke of her many years with the company. She spoke fondly of her time. She seemed to have a lot of respect for her boss, the owner. Being a business owner myself, hiring is a very hard part. Finding a team like this says a lot about him and her loyalty I found to be inspiring. Not many business still have that spark that makes you just want to root for them like a Hollywood movie... And I called because I asked how I could help. I love the product.
Why do I love the Fresh Patch? Pee pads don't work. We can train dogs to pee anywhere. That's the point of training. But once they learn to pee on something soft and cotton-smelling like a pee pad, is it any wonder they pee on blankets and towels and carpet? Why are we training them to pee on cotton and then punishing (I see lots of pee-punishing out there) them for doing what we trained? Let's be smarter about this. Where do we want them to pee when we are done? Outside? Where? On the concrete? On someone's blanket during a picnic? NO! We want them to pee outside on the grass. So while they are babies and we are transitioning them, let's set them up for success. What's a good intermediary for grass outside? How about grass inside! And it's got to be better for the environment than all those pee pads. Save the pee pads to clean up the accidents and use the grass for potty training!
How do I get my Fresh Patch set up? It's the same potty training as before... But WAY better!! Set up the grass. I recommend the plastic tray under the grass. If your pup is still learning to aim you can line the bottom with pee pads to catch any mistakes in the beginning. Pups love the grass in the beginning just to lay on it. My dogs always take the opportunity to get some sun on a fresh Fresh Patch. If it's the first one ever, catch some urine from your pup and rub it on the grass for the scent. How? I will don a glove, capture and accident. Then take the paper towel used to clean it up and wipe it on the grass. You can also glove up and stick a small statue in the stream and then put the statue on the grass. Just get their smell on the grass. After that, work your routine. Take your pup and set them down on the grass. When you get a good potty, cheer like it's the best day of your life and have AWESOME treats... every time. And do yourself a favor. Put a cue on it. Say a phrase every time your pup potties. "Go potty!" "Get Busy" Get creative, but be consistent. It will help later. Do this until you have a routine.
The Fresh Patch will help the potty training and transitioning outside. Dogs don't generalize very well unless it's food or fear. So keeping the steps as easy as possible will make a huge difference. When you finally have all those shots done and are ready to take that pup outside and work on pottying the park, it will be way easier. But you also have the option, especially with small dogs in apartments so just go potty on the balcony. Save the walk for sniffs and fun. The whole walk can be about walking skills, no accidents in the elevator or lobby of your building. When you are ready to go, do a quick potty on the Fresh Patch - then have a peaceful walk. It's not antsy all the way to the park then your pup voids only twice a day. Yikes. Dogs can have bladder infections. Let the walk be about the fun of walking! With a Fresh Patch, your dog can go potty when they need to go!
A great example of the benefit of the Fresh Patch has been during the stay-at-home transition. More people are at home with their pups and they are taking care of their own pups. Fresh Patch has been busier than ever! With parks closing and everyone getting puppies, Fresh Patch has been able to maintain service with no breaks or interruptions. They have been continuing provide a valuable product to help people stay indoors with their pups. We have appreciated our patch for our pups so we could minimize our contact outdoors and still let our pups potty as much as they need.
This product was suggested to me and I referrals are the best! So from a dog trainer to you, this is the best potty training products out there. IF you are potty training, this is must product. IF you live in a high rise and have a pup (any size), this is a huge benefit. Ditch the pee pad, unless you are cleaning a big mess. This is tool in your tool box for potty. It's a better environmental product, better training product, better to look at (than pee pads etc) and the company is a story you'll want to see succeed. Give it a try. Our Philosophy:
We’ve invited another species to live in our homes, and our dogs are much more than accessories; they’re our guests. They don’t speak our language, and like in the movie E.T., we don’t want to be the intimidating figures trying to coerce a scared, confused being. Instead, we want to be like ...
Eye Contact, Eye Contact, Eye Contact!
Reward every glance. Start by reinforcing brief glances, then encourage your pup to hold your gaze a bit longer. Gradually phase out your part of the eye contact—your pup will learn to watch you and adapt to your movements naturally. This approach helps them learn to walk with you without relying on leash cues.
Remember, the leash is purely for safety—not for communication.
Take a look at this video with Meghan and Buckee. Buckee is watching Meghan closely, and she rewards him by making eye contact, smiling, and offering treats. Meghan also looks forward occasionally, teaching Buckee to walk with her in sync.
Notice that Buckee is a reactive pup, so the leash is essential for safety, especially if he responds to something unexpectedly. However, it’s only used for physical control when necessary. When Buckee refocuses, Meghan reestablishes instructional control, and they continue their walk together. She does a fantastic job of engaging with him! In ...
Loose-Leash Walking Tip:
Where you reward makes a big difference! Try using the hand on the same side as your dog when giving treats or praise.
When you reach across your body to reward with the opposite hand, it draws your dog’s nose in front of you, encouraging them to move ahead and potentially start pulling.
In the video of Meghan and Domino, Meghan holds the leash with her left hand while Domino walks on her right. She rewards him by petting and giving treats with her right hand. This keeps Domino walking by her side on a loose leash, rather than in front, pulling her along.
Next time you’re out walking with your pup, try rewarding with the hand on the same side as your dog.

This is about counter-surfers, but I love the description of trying to shame dogs. This author, Pat Miller helped me understand this concept in her book the Power of Positive Dog Training.
